# Reward points benefit
Reward members with points for purchases and with those points, members can redeem them for store credits.

If you are using Shopify customer accounts, redeeming points issues store credit to the customer's Shopify account. The customer signs in to view their balance and use it as a payment method at checkout.

If you are using legacy customer accounts, redeeming points creates a discount code in the member portal area. The member applies that code at checkout to use the redeemed credit.

1. From the main menu, click **Benefits**.
2. Find the membership tier you want to add this benefit to and click **Edit Benefits**.

3. Next find the Reward Points card and then toggle the Reward Points benefit to enabled.
4. Click **Edit**.

5. Now enter a name for your reward points benefit e.g. Reward Points
6. Enter a description e.g. Get points for every purchase you make and then exchange your points for store credits.
7. Now enter how many points a member will earn every time they spend 1 unit of currency. For example, if your store's primary currency is USD then for every 1 USD spent by the customer, how many points should they receive.
8. Now enter how many points are required for the customer to get a 1 unit of currency discount. For example, if your store's primary currency is USD then how many points are required for the customer to get a 1 USD discount.
9. Choose how long credit created by a points redemption remains valid. Select a number of days, months, or years, or choose **No Expiry**. For Shopify customer accounts, this expiry is applied to the native store-credit grant. For legacy customer accounts, it is applied to the discount code.
10. Click **Save**.
## How members redeem points
Points are not automatically converted just because the member signs in. In their membership area, the member opens the Reward Points redemption controls, selects the currency where a choice is available, enters the amount of credit to redeem, and confirms.
The entered amount is credit in currency units, not the number of points. For example, at 100 points per $1, redeeming $5 uses 500 points. Enter a positive whole amount within the available redeemable balance. Any unredeemed points remain available.
In Shopify customer accounts, successful redemption issues native Shopify store credit. In the legacy member dashboard, it creates a discount code. The configured expiry applies to the issued credit or code, not to the points balance. Members can redeem from either supported membership experience; Shopify POS displays rewards, but point redemption takes place in the member area.
