# Add a single member

Use the Members page to add one member without preparing a CSV file or waiting for a purchase.

1. From the main menu, click **Members**.
2. Click **Add Member**.
3. Enter the member's email address. First name and last name are optional.
4. Select the Membership Product the member should join.
5. Optionally choose a Date Joined. Leave it blank to use today's date.
6. Keep active access selected if the member should be able to use membership benefits immediately.
7. Optionally select **Send welcome email** to send the welcome email configured for the selected membership product. This option is off by default.
8. Click **Add Member**.

If Shopify times out while creating or updating the customer, Memberply checks up to three times whether the supplied profile details were saved. An existing customer's update can be retried up to twice after a check confirms the details still differ. An uncertain customer creation is never repeated automatically. This recovery may make the operation take longer. If the changes still cannot be confirmed, processing stops for that member with a message to review the Shopify customer before retrying. The membership is not saved by that row, though Shopify may already have changed the customer.

If the email address already belongs to a Shopify customer, Memberply uses that customer. Otherwise, Memberply creates a new customer in Shopify. Memberply then saves the selected membership and shows the member in the Members list. Membership tags and metafields sync to Shopify in the background, without delaying welcome emails or joining credits.

After adding a member, you may see **Member added. Shopify benefits are still syncing.** The member is saved and does not need to be added again. A **Shopify benefits syncing** badge appears in the Members list while automatic retries are active. The list refreshes automatically while syncing is pending.

Some checkout benefits, including exclusive product access, discounts, and Shopify automations that depend on membership tags or metafields, may be unavailable until syncing finishes. Memberply retries automatically using the latest membership status and tier. Sync retries do not resend welcome emails or issue joining credits again.

Memberply makes one initial sync attempt and up to eight automatic retries over roughly an hour. If those attempts fail, the badge changes to **Shopify sync needs attention** and automatic retries stop. Clear permissions or invalid-value errors stop sooner. The membership and pending sync remain saved.

To retry a stopped sync:

1. Open **Members** and find the member with **Shopify sync needs attention**.
2. Resolve the Shopify issue first, or contact support for help.
3. Click **Retry sync** beneath the badge.

The badge returns to **Shopify benefits syncing** while Memberply tries again using the current membership status and tier. Clicking again while a sync is already active does not restart its retry allowance. You do not need to add the member again. This action does not resend emails or issue credits.

If a separate error says member details were saved but follow-up processing failed, check the Members list before retrying.

To add many members at once, use the [CSV import](/members-area/import-members.md) instead.

For imported recurring members, you can customise the payment setup invitation and the 7-day and 1-day payment reminders under **Store setup > Emails** for their tier. The continuation button and payment instructions stay protected. See [editing payment emails](/members-area/import-members.md#edit-payment-setup-and-reminder-emails).
