# Add or edit a membership number

You can assign or correct a membership number for an individual member without importing a spreadsheet.

1. Open **Members** and select the member.
2. Beside their membership details, choose **Add membership number** if no number is assigned, or **Edit membership number** to correct an existing one.
3. Enter the number and choose **Save number**.

The updated number appears on the member’s record and is included in the member list and exports when refreshed.

## Number rules

* Use 1 to 100 characters. Letters, numbers and ordinary punctuation are supported; control characters are not.
* Leading zeros are preserved, so `001245` remains `001245`.
* Each number must be unique within your store. Duplicate checks ignore letter case and spaces at the start or end.
* A number cannot be saved blank. This editor adds or replaces a number; it does not remove it.
* If another staff member changes the number while you are editing, reload it before saving. If an import or another member update is running, wait for it to finish and try again.

Changing the number does not change the member’s tier, payments, benefits, Shopify customer identity or Memberply internal ID. The same member number is used across that member’s tiers in your store. Numbers are not generated automatically.

Future imports should use the updated number. Imports can still add a missing number but cannot replace an existing one. See [Import members](/members-area/import-members.md).

On the member details page, open **Edit member** to find this action.

## Find the customer in Shopify

When you add or change a membership number, Memberply queues a Shopify customer tag such as `memberply-number-001245`. Imports that assign a new number also queue this update. Changes sync in the background; allow time for Shopify to update its search results.

In Shopify, open **Orders > Create order** and enter the membership number in the **Customer** search box. Select the matching customer, then continue creating the order. Number-only and full-tag searches have been verified in our development store; confirm the result in your store before relying on this workflow. Always check the selected customer's details, because search can also match other customer fields.

When you change the number, Memberply removes previous `memberply-number-` tags and adds the current one. Other customer tags are preserved. This tag identifies the member and remains on inactive memberships; it does not grant benefits or confirm that a membership is active. Reserve the `memberply-number-` prefix for Memberply and do not use it for unrelated manual tags or tier tags.

Leading zeros are preserved. If a number contains a comma or percent sign, the tag escapes those characters as `%c` and `%%`; search by the full tag in that case. The membership number stored in Memberply remains unchanged.

Existing numbers are not bulk-published by this release. They can sync when a later membership update is queued. A store-wide backfill should be arranged after verifying the search behavior in that store. If a new or changed number has not appeared, check the member's Shopify sync status in Memberply and retry a paused sync.
