# Let members change their plan

Active members can choose another available membership plan from their membership area and complete Shopify checkout. This includes switching between monthly and yearly billing when the tier offers both options.

This customer-led checkout flow is separate from the merchant's [Change membership](/members-area/change-a-members-membership.md) action.

## Shopify customer accounts

1. The member opens the Memberply Membership Benefits page in their customer account.
2. Under membership details, they select **Upgrade or Downgrade Plan**.
3. They select an available plan and billing option, then confirm to continue to Shopify checkout.
4. They review the price and payment terms and complete checkout.

## Legacy customer accounts

The member opens the Memberply dashboard and goes to **Settings > Plans**. They choose an available plan in the change-plan section, confirm their selection and complete Shopify checkout.

## Available options

The member sees enabled storefront membership tiers and their available billing options. Their current tier and billing combination is omitted. On a tier offering both monthly and yearly billing, the other frequency can be available without choosing a different tier.

Selecting a plan prepares checkout. It does not schedule a future change or complete the membership change by itself. The new membership is processed after checkout, and the previous subscription is handled according to its cancellation policy. Check the resulting membership and billing dates after the purchase.

Application approval, product availability and checkout restrictions still apply. A plan appearing in the list does not grant approval for an application-linked tier. If checkout requires approval, contact the store before continuing.

## Unused subscription time

For an existing active recurring subscription, Memberply can calculate unused-time credit and attempt to apply it as a discount to a new recurring-plan checkout. It is not a cash refund or Shopify store-credit balance. Free and one-time destination checkouts do not receive this recurring-plan discount.

The final checkout amount is authoritative. If expected credit is missing or checkout cannot complete, contact the store before paying. The merchant's separate paid-tier invitation flow does not automatically provide this unused-time credit.

For an extension without changing the plan, staff can [change the next billing date](/members-area/change-a-subscriptions-next-billing-date.md) instead.

Members can also select a separate quarterly tier. Quarterly billing charges the displayed price every three months; it is not an extra frequency on a combined monthly/yearly tier.
