Verify Australian Business Numbers
Australian stores can collect an Australian Business Number as part of a membership application. This can help trade, wholesale, professional, and partner programs review whether an applicant represents a genuine registered business.
ABN options are available only when the Shopify store country is Australia.
Add an ABN field
Open Applications > Programs under Membership.
Create or edit an application program.
Add a field.
Choose Australian Business Number as the field type.
Map the field to Business identifier.
Mark it as required when every applicant must supply an ABN.
Enable ABN verification for the program when the option is available.
Save the program.
The ABN field validates the 11-digit number and checksum before the form is accepted.
Official ABN Lookup results
When Memberply's official ABN Lookup connection is enabled, a submitted ABN can return available details such as:
Whether the ABN is active
Registered entity name
Available business names
Entity type
State and postcode
GST registration information
Memberply compares available names with the business name entered on the form. A mismatch, inactive ABN, suppressed information, or unavailable result is shown for review.
An active ABN does not prove that an applicant meets your program's eligibility rules. Use the lookup as one review signal and keep the final approval decision with your team.
If official lookup is unavailable
Applications can still be submitted when the external lookup service or Memberply connection is unavailable. The application remains reviewable and the verification status shows that an automated result was not available.
Your team can manually search the public ABN Lookup website when necessary and decide whether to approve, reject, or request more information.
Stores outside Australia do not see the ABN field type or ABN verification settings.
